BrightWork News: Oral Cancer Awareness Month

Protect Yourself: Understand the Early Signs of Oral Cancer

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. Every year, close to 58,000 Americans are diagnosed with some form of oral cancer. This month, we’re encouraging all our patients to schedule regular exams, part of which includes Oral Cancer screenings. These screenings are one of the best ways to detect early signs of Oral Cancer and are crucial to maintaining a healthy mouth.

What is Oral Cancer Awareness Month?

For the last 15 years, dozens of dentistry foundations including the Academy of General Dentistry, American Dental Hygienist’s Association, American Dental Association, and more have used April to raise awareness for Oral Cancer and what the symptoms of Oral Cancer are.

When detected early, mortality and treatment-related health problems are reduced. Oral Cancer Awareness Month reminds people of the importance of regular screening and checkups. At Brightwork, we work with you to schedule your appointments regularly and stay on top of your health so you can learn how to prevent Oral Cancer.

What are the Symptoms of Oral Cancer?

Knowing the symptoms of oral cancer, or Mouth Cancer, is a critical first step to early detection. In between visits, it’s important to be aware of these symptoms, if you ever have a question or concern, don’t hesitate to book an appointment.

  • Red or white patches, pain or tenderness in mouth or lips

  • Lumps or thickening tissues, rough spots or crusty areas

  • Sores or soreness that don’t go away

  • A change in the way your teeth fit together when closing your mouth

  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking, or moving your jaw or tongue

Importance of Early Detection to Treat Mouth Cancer

Early detection is the best way to reduce the impact of oral cancer, which is why regular dentist visits are so important. In many cases, your dentist can see or feel tissue changes, even if they are very small or in the early stage. During your visit, we will conduct an oral cancer screening during your exam. If you have any questions or concerns, please bring them up with your dentist.

How to Prevent Oral Cancer

While there are strategies that can reduce the risk of getting Oral Cancer, there is no way to entirely eliminate the possibility.

Some key strategies that can help prevent oral cancer are:

  • Avoiding tobacco and alcohol products

  • Maintaining a healthy diet

  • Maintaining good oral hygiene

  • Regular dental check-ups

  • Staying informed about risk factors

Anyone can develop Oral Cancer, even without a risk factor, so it’s important that you keep up with your regularly scheduled dentist appointments to catch any early signs so you can begin treatment.

Treatment Options for Mouth Cancer

Depending on your case, you will typically have several treatment options available. The team at Brightwork Family Dentistry can work with you to determine the best course of action. You may be referred to Dr. Karen McAndrew, our prosthodontist.

“We work with specialists to employ a variety of treatment options including surgery or radiation, followed by oral rehabilitation which may require the use of a prosthesis. Treatment is dependent on the extent of the case. Our goal is to restore function, speaking ability and your smile to maintain your oral health,” says Dr. McAndrew.
