The Ins and Outs of Sedation Dentistry
What is Sedation Dentistry? The Ins and Outs
Sedation dentistry can seem complicated, intimidating, and a lot bigger than it is. For many, it’s an excellent tool to do things like help reduce extreme dental anxiety, help with a fear of needles, or reduce teeth sensitivity to certain procedures. That being said, many people associate sedation with surgery or the medical dramas they watch on TV. This article will help sort out fact from fiction while shedding some light on exactly what sedation dentistry is.
“The one thing I think is that people believe they’re going to go to sleep, but it’s more of a moderate conscious sedation or twilight sleep; it’s more about making the patient comfortable,” says Dr. Iachini, one of the Brightwork dentists who prides herself on making her patients feel comfortable in her chair.
Who Can Benefit from Sedation Dentistry?
We recommend sedation dentistry on a case-by-case basis. After meeting with one of our doctors, we may discuss it as an option for your visit or procedure. As always, you’re welcome to ask as many questions as you’d like. We’re here to help.
Typically, we’ll recommend sedation for the following groups:
People with extreme dental anxiety
Overly sensitive gag reflexes
Fear of needles
Extremely sensitive teeth
Difficulty controlling movements
Groups with physical, cognitive, or behavioral needs.
“Many people can benefit from sedation dentistry as a pathway to care. Many people find they can start with sedation, and over time, as they become confident with their provider, they may see less of a need for it,” explains Dr. Iachini
Varieties of Sedation Dentistry
At our practice, we provide various options for sedation dentistry tailored to individual needs. Our experienced professionals utilize two primary methods: oral sedation and inhaled minimal sedation. The specific type of sedation administered is determined during your consultation, taking into account your anxiety levels and how your body responds to medication.
How Does Sedation Dentistry Function?
Oral sedation dentistry involves the use of a pill to induce sedation. Approximately an hour before your scheduled procedure, our dentists will administer the pill. By the time your treatment begins, you should experience a drowsy sensation. If necessary for moderate sedation, our team may administer an additional dose.
Alternatively, we offer inhaled minimal sedation as another sedative option at Brightwork Family Dentistry. During this process, our dentist will place a mask over your mouth and instruct you to inhale a blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Your relaxation level and tolerance to the gas will be carefully monitored until you are ready for your procedure.
Preparing for your Sedation Dentistry Appointment
Our team will discuss what you need to do for your appointment ahead of time with you. Typically, you’ll be asked to follow a series of instructions.
Don’t drink anything but water for about six hours before the appointment, and don’t drink any liquids for about two hours before. It’s also important to not consume any alcohol in the 24 hours leading up to the procedure. You can usually eat solid foods up to four hours before your appointment.
For sedation dentistry appointments, we recommend bringing a friend or relative to help you after the appointment. You may need someone to drive you home, depending on the level of sedation you receive.
Other specifics for your case will be communicated ahead of time. If you have further questions- just ask!
