Types of Dental Implants And What You Need To Know

Are you considering dental implants?  Many of our patients have questions about this life-changing procedure.

Dental implants can be a game-changer for your smile, whether you're missing a single tooth or need a complete set of teeth replaced. At BrightWork Family Dentistry, we're here to help you understand your options and guide you through dental implants.

Dental implants are designed to look, feel, and function just like natural teeth. They're a popular choice because they're durable and long-lasting and can help maintain the health of your jawbone.

Types of Dental Implants

There isn't a one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to dental implants. Let's look at the main types:

Endosteal Implants These are the most common type of dental implants. They can be described as little titanium screws that we place directly into your jawbone. Once the bone heals around the implant (a process called osseointegration), we’d attach a crown that looks just like a natural tooth. Endosteal implants are great for patients with a healthy, strong jawbone. They're versatile and can replace a single tooth or support a bridge or denture for multiple teeth.

Subperiosteal Implants If you don't have enough healthy jawbone for an endosteal implant, don't worry! Subperiosteal implants might be a good option. These implants sit on top of the bone but under the gum. They're less common but can be an excellent solution for patients who can't or don't want to undergo a bone grafting procedure.

Zygomatic Implants This is the least common type of implant. They're used in special cases where a patient has significant bone loss in the upper jaw. Zygomatic implants are longer than regular implants and are anchored in the cheekbone rather than the jawbone.

What You Need to Know About Getting Dental Implants

Deciding to get dental implants is a big step. Here's what you should know:

The Process Takes Time

Getting dental implants isn't a quick fix. The entire process can take several months because we need time for your bone to heal and grow around the implant. But don't worry – we'll ensure you have temporary teeth to wear during the healing process.

You Need Healthy Gums and Adequate Bone

For implants to be successful, you need to have healthy gums and enough bone to support the implant. If you've lost bone due to gum disease or tooth loss, you might need a bone graft before getting implants.

Implants Require Care, Just Like Natural Teeth

While implants can't get cavities, they still need regular care. Brush, floss, and continue getting regular check-ups. With proper care, your implants can last a lifetime.

Implants Can Benefit Your Overall Oral Health

Implants don't just replace missing teeth—they can also help maintain the health of your jawbone and prevent remaining natural teeth from shifting.
