What to know about dental x-rays

The basics of dental x-rays

Dental X-rays aren’t just about sticking the plastic wings in your mouth to make you look funny; they’re a crucial tool in your overall treatment plan and give our dentists a real-time look at what’s happening inside your mouth. Dental X-rays help detect dental health issues early and allow your dentist to treat things like gum disease and cavities better.

Types of Dental X-rays

There are two primary types of dental X-rays: intraoral (taken inside your mouth) and extraoral (taken outside your mouth). These X-rays or radiographs show the internal structure of your teeth and jaw and are used to examine structures like jawbone, nerves, sinuses, and teeth roots.

“X-rays are used in conjunction with a thorough examination to make an accurate diagnosis.” - Dr. Crowley

What Do Dental X-rays Detect?

As part of a complete dental examination, dental X-rays can be used to help detect several oral health issues, including:

  • Decay beneath fillings

  • Bone loss in the jaw

  • Infection

  • Cavities

  • Impacted or unerupted teeth

  • Abscesses

  • Cysts and tumors

Our team of dentists will also use X-rays when planning treatments with you, including dental implants, braces, and dentures.

Are Dental X-rays safe?

In essence, yes. Dental X-rays are an incredible tool for maintaining a healthy mouth, and the team at our Richmond office is trained to offer you the safest X-ray experience possible.

The amount of radiation from an X-ray is minimal, about the same as the amount you may receive from TVs or smartphones. Our team will also use protective equipment like lead aprons or a thyroid collar during your X-ray to protect you from unnecessary radiation.

“Dental radiographs are a safe and indispensable part of the diagnostic process.” Says Dr. Crowley.

Additional Information About Dental X-rays

Again, the frequency and type of dental X-ray you receive will depend on your specific needs and the recommendations of Dr. Crowley or Dr. Iachini.

As you’re preparing for your next appointment, here are some other helpful facts about Dental X-rays

  • On average, most patients receive dental X-rays once every six to 18 months.

  • You have the right to refuse dental X-rays, which will negatively impact your treatment or make you ineligible.

  • Dental X-rays can show some forms of cancer.

  • Receiving dental X-rays while pregnant has been deemed safe by the American Dental Association, but your dentist may choose to avoid it. Our team will talk it over with you before the procedure.
