Opalescence FAQ

What is Opalescence?

  • During your initial consultation, your dentist will discuss options for whitening your teeth.

  • Depending on the kinds of stains his examination reveals, Dr. Crowley or Dr. Iachini can explain the science behind extrinsic and intrinsic discolorations and recommend an effective tooth whitening system called Opalescence.

  • The gel used during the in-office treatment is specially formulated to strengthen tooth enamel and even prevent cavities while breaking down and removing stains at the same time.

How does tooth whitening work?

  • The tooth whitening you receive at a dentist’s office is much more efficient than whitening toothpaste, oral rinses, and whitening strips available at your local drugstore.

  • Opalescence gel dispensed by your dentist contains chemicals that work directly on the discolored tooth enamel.

  • A cheek retractor will be placed in your mouth as the treatment begins. The whitening gel is activated by a syringe then carefully applied to each tooth. The gel must sit on the teeth for a period of time to be effective.

  • Unlike other teeth whitening treatments, no bright light is used during the whitening process with Opalescence.

  • There is a slight risk of sensitivity during the Opalescence treatment, but no permanent damage to your gums or teeth.

  • Millions of patients experience dazzling results from Opalescence tooth whitening.
